We do not recommend that you use a conventional mattress pad or protector as that would take away from the breathability of the mattress. All Newton covers zip off and can be washed as much as needed quickly. Because the cover is water-resistant, most messes do not go through to the core, but you can clean even the mattress core in the tub or shower.
Once messes get a bit larger during the toddler years, you may want to add a layer of waterproof protection to make cleaning even easier.
